The Auto Theft Unit responds to and investigates auto theft related crimes including chop shops. Investigators assist patrol or other units with vehicle identifications when vehicles are burned and or display fictitious or altered VIN’s. The Auto Theft Unit conducts quarterly community awareness events to provide information on auto theft prevention and performs free VIN etching. Auto Theft Investigators receive advanced training and are experts in crime scene investigation, criminal trends and analysis, confidential VIN inspections, and chop shop investigations.

They are also skilled in proper use of complex equipment such as bait vehicles, GPS tracking capabilities and hidden video/audio surveillance equipment. LPR (License Plate Reader) equipment, a device that reads and analyzes a high volume of license plates in a short amount of time, is also used to increase the recovery numbers of stolen vehicles and license plates.
